International Open Access Day Print E-mail

October 14, 2008 is the world’s first Open Access Day. The founding partners of this initiative are Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, Students for Free Culture, and the Public Library of Science.

Open Access Day was inspired by the National Day of Action on February 15th, 2007, led by Students for Free Culture with support from the Alliance for Taxpayer Access. This year, the same partners have joined forces with the Public Library of Science, the open-access scientific and medical online publisher.

Open Access Day is expected to help to broaden awareness and understanding of Open Access, including recent mandates and emerging policies, within the international higher education community and the general public. It should create a key opportunity for the higher education community and the general public to understand more clearly the opportunities of wider access and use of content.
